Proteus is an agentic coding assistant for MorphOS - Claude Code, not Claude
Desktop. A native PowerPC program that runs in a Shell, reads and edits the code
in your project, runs commands with your permission, and works the way an AI
coding tool does on other platforms - now on MorphOS.

YOU NEED YOUR OWN ANTHROPIC API KEY

Proteus is a client for Anthropic's API. It does not come with a key and cannot
work without one. Get one at https://console.anthropic.com/ ; API usage is
billed to you by Anthropic.

WHAT IT SENDS

In use, Proteus sends the prompts you type and the contents of the files you (or
it) read to Anthropic's API over TLS - the same as any Claude client. Nothing is
sent anywhere else. Do not point it at anything you would not put through a
hosted service. Your key is kept in a plain file (MorphOS is single-user with no
keychain); keep it readable only by you.

FEATURES

 - An agent loop: it reads, searches, writes and edits files in your workspace,
   and iterates tool calls until the task is done.
 - A permission model built for a platform with no sandbox and no memory
   protection - approve, deny, or allow-always, with the workspace as a wall
   that nothing outside can be written past. Command execution is OFF by
   default.
 - Saved sessions you can resume, prompt caching, and conversation management
   (compaction and pruning) for a slow machine and a growing context.
 - A live REPL: type "/" to see the commands, filter as you type, scroll with
   the arrow keys. An audit log records every tool call and permission decision.

RUNS ON A SYSTEM WITH NO UNDO

MorphOS has no memory protection and no OS-level undo. With your permission
Proteus runs shell commands and changes files. The permission model is the
guardrail; command execution is disabled unless you turn it on. Read
doc/PERMISSIONS.md before enabling it.

INSTALLATION

 1. Copy the "proteus" binary somewhere handy, e.g.  Copy proteus Work:tools/
 2. Put your API key on one line, no quotes:
        Echo "sk-ant-..." >Work:tools/.anthropic-key
    (read from PROGDIR:.anthropic-key, then .anthropic-key in the current
    directory, then ENV:ANTHROPIC_API_KEY)
 3. Start it in the project you want to work on:
        cd Work:myproject
        Work:tools/proteus
    Add -x to allow command execution (see README.md for all options).
