Have you ever wanted to check where a domain points, find its mail servers,
or understand why a name is not resolving on your Amiga? This package gives
you two small commands for doing exactly that.

adig is the DNS lookup command from c-ares, ported to classic m68k AmigaOS.
Its command line and output are similar to BIND dig. It can query A, AAAA, MX,
NS, PTR, SOA, SRV, TXT, CAA and other DNS record types.

ahost is the quick companion command from c-ares. Give it a host name to see
its IPv4 address, or an IPv4 address to find the associated host name. Use
adig when you want to choose a DNS server or inspect a particular record.

Things you can do
-----------------

Ask a particular DNS server for a site's IPv4 address:

  adig @1.1.1.1 amiga.org A

Find where email for a domain is delivered:

  adig @1.1.1.1 amiga.org MX

Find the authoritative DNS servers for a domain:

  adig @1.1.1.1 amiga.org NS

Look up the name belonging to an IP address:

  adig @1.1.1.1 -x 8.8.8.8

Check whether two DNS servers give the same answer:

  adig @192.168.1.1 amiga.org A
  adig @1.1.1.1 amiga.org A

Quickly find the IPv4 address for a site:

  ahost amiga.org

Quickly look up the name belonging to an IPv4 address:

  ahost 8.8.8.8

1.1.1.1 is a public DNS server. 192.168.1.1 is an example router address;
your router may use a different address.

The archive includes two builds of each command:

  adig-68000 Build for 68000 systems
  adig-020 Build for 68020/68030/68040/68060 systems
  ahost-68000 Build for 68000 systems
  ahost-020 Build for 68020/68030/68040/68060 systems

International names are entered in their DNS form. For example,
xn--mnchen-3ya.de represents a name whose second letter is a u with an umlaut.

Double-click Install-adig for a guided text-based installation. It detects
the CPU and recommends a build, while leaving the final choice and install
destination to you. The destination entered is the adig path; ahost is placed
in the same directory under the name ahost.

Manual installation is also possible. Copy the matching pair. For example:

  Copy adig-68000 C:adig
  Copy ahost-68000 C:ahost

Start the TCP/IP stack before using either command. Roadshow may keep
DHCP-provided DNS servers internally instead of writing them to
name_resolution. If either command cannot find a server automatically,
specify one:

  adig @192.168.1.1 amiga.org MX
  ahost -s 192.168.1.1 amiga.org
